The Montessori
method is a child-centered alternative
educational method for children, based on
theories of child development originated by
Italian educator Maria Montessori
(1870-1952) in the late 19th and early 20th
centuries. It is applied primarily in
preschool and elementary school settings
although some Montessori middle and high
schools exist.
The Montessori method is characterized by an
emphasis on self-directed activity on the
part of the child and clinical observation
on the part of the teacher (often called a
director, directress, or guide). It stresses
the importance of adapting the child's
learning environment to his or her
developmental level, and of the role of
physical activity in absorbing abstract
concepts and practical skills. It is also
characterized by the use of autodidactic
(self-correcting) equipment for introduction
and learning of various concepts.
The Montessori method teaches reading via
phonics and whole language, the comparative
benefits of which are presently being
recognized.

While the Montessori name has achieved some
attention, it is not a trademark and is
associated with more than one organization.
There are schools 'influenced' by Montessori
which bear little resemblance to (and have
received substantial criticism from) other
institutions with closer lineage to
Montessori's work. The rest of this article
refers to Montessori's work, the work of her
colleagues and their successors.
How to Choose Day Nurseries & Child Care
Parents who work often need day nurseries
and child care to take care of their babies
and kids during the day while they are at
word. In order to find the day care that is
right for you, though, you will need to know
what questions to ask them. First, find out
how long the day care has been in business.
Day nurseries that have been in business for
several years should have the experience
that they need to care for infants and kids.
Ask them if they take care of kids that are
your children’s ages. Some childcare
facilities focus on caring for kids who are
babies, infants, and toddlers, but others
might have kids hat are in kindergarten,
elementary, or middle school. If your child
needs educational help, then ask the day
child care centers if they have schools or
tutors that can use toys to play with and
private lessons to teach your child. If they
have special needs, then you might want to
ask them if they have someone trained to
tutor children with particular handicaps or
disorders. Also, ask them if they have
tutors that teach at the pre school,
elementary, and middle school levels. Safety
is an important feature, so ask if they have
surveillance and monitors like Nanny Cam to
keep an eye on the children. Ask the daycare
if they have health care benefits too to
care for sick or injured kids. When you find
childcare centers you like, get their
contact information, locations, and hours of
operation so that you can contact them again
easily. |

Montessori
classrooms provide an atmosphere that is
pleasant and attractive to allow children to
learn at their own pace and interact with
others in a natural and peaceful
environment. In the ideal classroom,
children would have unfettered access to the
outdoors, but this is frequently not
possible given modern day space
considerations and cost.
In response,
Montessori teachers stock their classrooms
with nature shelves, living plants and small
pets, or perhaps a window-sill garden,
allowing children to experience as much of
the natural world as possible given modern
constraints.
In the
elementary, middle, and upper school years,
Montessori schools ideally adhere to the
three-year age range of pupils to encourage
an interactive social and learning
environment. This system allows flexibility
in learning pace and allowing older children
to become teachers by sharing what they have
learned |
